Every year, thousands of aspiring accountants from across Asia and the world head to Australian universities for a shot at building a rewarding, fulfilling and international career. They are guided by experts in their fields, supported by dedicated university staff and have cutting-edge facilities on campus to practise the tools of their future trade. It’s the ideal foundation and setting for them to join one of the fastest growing occupations in Australia today.

Sri Lankan Nayani Kasthurirthne is a successful product of this winning combination. She had selected to pursue a Master of Professional Accounting at the Charles Sturt University Study Centres based on the recommendations of friends who had studied there. Charles Sturt University is a partner of Study Group Australia, a private Australian and New Zealand education institution providing pre-university, foundation and higher education programmes. This partnership enables the university to provide educational opportunities in Accounting, Business and Information Technology at three Study Centres in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

For Nayani, it was the positive reputation of Australia’s education system, academic accolades of Charles Sturt University and the country’s famed living standards that sealed the deal. Charles Sturt University tops the graduate employment ranking in The Good Universities Guide for 2020, with 86% of its graduates in full-time employment within four months of completing their course, a figure 14% higher than the national average. It has a five-star rating for undergraduate and postgraduate full-time employment; learner engagement (undergraduate); teaching quality for business and management subjects; and undergraduate starting salary of 65,000 Australian dollars. It is also Australia’s online university of choice, according to 2018 government data.

When her classes began, Nayani saw first-hand how Charles Sturt University had achieved all these. “In our master’s programme, it covered activities and assignments that are based on real-world industry situations. As students, we got to engage in problem-solving situations which are really helpful to me now in my career. Most of our assignments, research experiences, volunteer activities and leadership roles provided me an opportunity to learn and adapt to what the job market required,” she says.

More importantly, she could see how supportive and respectful lecturers and staff were towards the international student community. “Lecturers are professionally qualified and staff are friendly. Most of the lecturers are leading personalities from the accounting industry,” she says. Nayani was most inspired by one of the lecturers who not only had a PhD qualification, but was also the owner of a business which provides accounting information system solutions.

The Master of Professional Accounting is accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and CPA Australia. The choice is yours if you would like to select the 12-subject option or the 16-subject option. The difference? The 12-subject option is ideal for those who have studied in or at the equivalent of an Australian university prior and hold an undergraduate degree in a subject other than accounting. It is also fitting for students with an undergraduate degree in accounting that is not recognised by CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand. Alternatively, the 16-subject option will suit graduates of non-accounting disciplines.

At the Charles Sturt University Study Centres, there is a lot more to gain than just a comprehensive curriculum. Industry experience is significant in today’s competitive job market — there is a 12-week post-study internship programme, delivered by Study Group Australia, that offers just that.

Leading up to the internship, the Study Centres provide their students with tailored workshops, a career research project, and loads of career tips and advice that will ensure graduates make the most of their time here. These experiences let students learn and apply their knowledge, as well as grow professionally — it’s a set-up that explains why 93% of graduates here are in full-time employment, within three years of graduating.

Today, Nayani works as a business and financial analyst and she credits her success to the support and guidance that was generously provided to her during and after her studies. “The career guidance unit provides all required support, facilitating and training us in how to write resumes and do well in interviews. After we are selected by a company for an internship, they also follow up with us to assess whether we received the maximum benefits from the internship,” she shares.

This experience, just one of many, is testament to the dedication and drive that are instilled in learners here, and the university’s commitment to producing in-demand, career-ready graduates.
