Media and Communication at Temple: Providing the brains and brawn needed for a career in media

Philadelphia-based Temple University has been steadily climbing university rankings in recent years. Since 2012; Temple has risen an impressive 17 places to take the 115th spot in US News and World Report’s Best College rankings.

Those in tune with current affairs may recognise Temple’s name as the first university in the world to successfully remove HIV from human cells. Those in the field of business will likely be familiar with Temple’s excellent business research, and their highly-reputed online MBA program, which US News has declared top-rated for three consecutive years. One Temple school the average person may not be familiar with is the Klein College of Media and Communication – but for any prospective student pursuing a degree in any form of marketing or media, looking into Klein is very much worth your while.

Since opening its doors in 1927, Klein has built a reputation of excellence and stands as a springboard for budding media experts to launch their careers. Each of Klein’s six areas of study allows students access to the highest level of practical support and resources while assigning them hands-on projects in their specialist field.  In a discipline that’s competitive and constantly-developing, it’s integral for a media student to be confident that their program is in tune with the latest developments in the field, offering an experience that enables them to stand out. It appears that Klein, located in heart of the fourth-largest media market of the US, certainly delivers in this department.

It’s a testament to Klein’s high standards that its alumni are increasingly recognised on a global scale. Most recently, a 2017 Klein graduate achieved a first for the college, winning a place as one of just 32 successful applicants to receive the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. The Rhodes scholarship grants recipients an all expenses paid post-graduate education at Oxford University in the UK – an institution currently ranked the number one university in the world. While the Rhodes Scholarship is a new title for Klein to add to its long record of academic success, the college is no stranger to such awards; with seven Pulitzer prizes to its name between its thousands of successful alumni, Klein has certainly made its mark on the academic world.

In addition to academic recognition, students keen to pursue a career in media after their studies will be pleased to note that Klein is also highly-regarded by well-known national media outlets. Many famous journalists are Klein alumni, including Harvey Pollock and Tamron Hall. Well-known TV hosts and anchors, including Steve Baskerville and Sheri Lynch, also started their careers as students of Klein’s Media Studies and Production program.

Current students of Klein continue to reap the benefits of the school’s strong national reputation to this day. For example, this past September a group of Klein students were approached by the sports network ESPNU to put together a video package about what ‘Temple TUFF’, the tagline of Temple’s athletics, means to Temple athletes. The piece the students made was then shown at halftime during a national college sports broadcast. Opportunities such as this promote nationwide exposure, and of course are priceless for any person in media production – and for a person to achieve this while still an undergraduate is an excellent addition to any CV.

Another program offered at Klein is Strategic Advertising & Marketing – a unique specialization offered as a joint collaboration between Klein and the Fox School of Business. Klein’s marketing students certainly stand out from their peers in front of potential employers when it comes to practical marketing skills. Marketing Edge’s Collegiate ECHO Marketing Challenge of 2016/2017 highlighted just how impressive Klein students are, with not one but two Klein teams taking gold and silver places respectively in the challenge.

Teams were set the task of designing a marketing campaign for the Collette Travel Company, fuelled by a hypothetical budget of US$5million, and it’s clear from the medals Klein students brought home that the judges were pleased with what they saw. A number of the school’s marketing alumni have gone on to forge extremely successful careers in the advertising and marketing realm. Among them is Pete Jones, the current senior Vice President of McCann-Erickson, New York – the world’s largest advertising agency network.

Media and Communications is inarguably an ever-expanding, competitive field, making it all the more difficult for prospective students to know which university they should choose. As outlined above, Klein boasts a solid track record in producing success in terms of academics and the global workforce. Klein has consistently produced alumni who make indelible marks on education, rising to the top of some of the world’s most influential companies, and becoming household names in the fields of journalism and entertainment. For a student who desires a long and meaningful career in their chosen aspect of media and communications, options really don’t come any more solid than the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple.
