Tragedy struck Philadelphia yesterday when a 18-year-old Temple University student fell from the window of a dorm room in Centre City.
Authorities have stated that the unnamed female student is likely to have slipped while taking photographs on the window ledge of a room in the Art Institute of Philadelphia at around 18:00, falling eight floors and landing on a pedestrian.
“She may have been even been sitting on the [window] ledge- it’s about a two-foot-wide ledge- possibly taking some pictures,” Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small told CBS Philadelphia.
The student was pronounced dead upon her arrival at Jefferson University Hospital.
The 44-year-old female pedestrian hit by the teenager was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital. While she suffered a fractured neck vertebra and lost a number of teeth, she was described as being in stable condition hours after the incident.
According to the authorities, the 18-year-old student had come to the Art Institute dorm to visit friends. Philadelphia police have confirmed that they will obtain a warrant to search the dorm room, which is currently inhabited by two male students.
There is currently no evidence to suggest that yesterday’s events were suspicious; the investigation is ongoing.
